Connecting With the Past: A Young Adult Family History Fair

October 30, 2014 – Cedar City, UT
On November 1 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located on 500 S. 1100 W., youth and young adults will gather for a family history fair to learn how to discover their family history.  They will attend classes and workshops teaching them how they can use the internet to find information about their ancestors so they can learn where they come from.  “I believe that learning about their family history can help young people be more confident and successful because when they know where they come from, they know who they are,” says Jessica Burnett, organizer of this event.
Presenters at the fair include Pamela Chatfield, director of the Cedar City Family History Center, as well as family history consultants from units in the local Married Student Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  They cover topics from “Family History for the Busy College Student” and researching a name to using Facebook and mobile apps for family history work.  The Fair will start at 9:00am and end at noon with hot chocolate and donuts for all of the participants.
Burnett, a senior computer science major at Southern Utah University, organized this Family History Fair for her EDGE project.  Each student who graduates from SUU must complete an EDGE project.  EDGE stands for ‘Education Designed to Give Experience’, and its purpose is to encourage students to get out of the classroom and gain experiences to broaden their education.  Burnett is doing her project through the Community Engagement Center, which helps students learn to connect and participate in their own community.  She hopes that connecting young people to their ancestors will help them discover the most important community of all: their family.  ###
